About Me!

Students call me Ms. Rachael or Ms. Nilson. I teach special education. I have two bachelor's degrees in special education and elementary education from the University of New Mexico and masters degree in Education Leadership/Administration from New Mexico Highlands University. I taught at Atrisco Elementary for 4 years, had two babies back to back and stayed home with my children for a few years. I started at Mission Avenue Elementary last year. I have been with working with children in various ways for over a decade. I found my calling through teaching and hope to make a positive change in the community.

I love being outside and exploring the mountains. I learned to ski last year and fell in love!  I have two children that attend Mission Avenue. My son is in first grade and my daughter in the NM Pre K program. I love being a mom and teaching is my passion. I also enjoy physical fitness activities and sports like swimming, weight lifting and core/balance work. I am training to be a group fitness instructor for a high interval training class! Wish me luck!

My Personal Mission Statement

I will strive to be open minded, a life-long learner, grounded, confident, understanding, an active listener and real with others.

I will work hard to continue to be a positive person with grit and integrity and always lead my life with kindness.

I will push my physical body to its limits and persevere when I want to quit. My mind aims to be the best version of myself by learning from others and the world around me. I will reflect on how I can be a better person and show gratitude. I will live ethically and remain strong but know it is ok to be upset.

I will use my skills of being a hard worker, empathetic, positive, organized, insightful, a planner, and thoughtful to work towards my goals.

My mission is to be more self aware and conscious of others. I would like to inspire others from my small space in the world so others can feel empowered and positive, like a ripple in water.
